Review: Surviving Your Adolescents

Surviving Your AdolescentsAs parents of a six-year-old, we have yet to experience the challenges of parenting adolescent, so for our review of Surviving Your Adolescent: How to Manage-and Let Go of-Your 13-18 Year Olds by Thomas W. Phelan, Ph.D. we turned to someone who has gone through the process several times. In fact, she was the one who first told us about 1-2-3 Magic. Here’s Karin’s review:

“As a mother, grandmother, and psychotherapist I would highly recommend Dr. Phelan’s book Surviving Your Adolescents 3rd edition. It is timely and up to date with adolescent issues. It is a very fast read. It is also validating, enlightening, and humorous! I will definitely recommend to parents of teens.”

Surviving Your Adolescents is available for $14.95 in local bookstores and Amazon. (affiliate link)

Review: The Klampie Mystery

The Klampie Mystery by Luis Rodriguez is the story of Samantha, a young girl who travels to Australia with her family. Just before the trip, she receives a stuffed koala toy that she names “Klampie” because it clamps onto things like a real koala. But shortly after arriving in Australia something happens to Klampie and it’s up to Samantha to solve the mystery.

Great illustrations throughout the story help pull the reader into the story, but the story is pretty simple and should strike a chord with any child who has traveled with a treasured toy.

Rodriguez mixes in facts about Koalas and Australia, making it surprisingly educational. However some, for example a brief explanation of “vice versa,” seem out of place in a book for ages 4-8. Because of this, and the amount of text on some of the page, I would be more comfortable recommending this story for eight-year-olds.

The Klampie Mystery is available in hardcover for $14.95 in local bookstores and Amazon. A Kindle edition is also available. (affiliate links)
